MOST IMPORTANTLY

Luke 10:38-42 tells of two sisters in the presence of Christ ...

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Martha's sense of responsibility created a self-imposed burden which led to indignant thoughts about her sister. Instead of confronting Mary, she addressed the Lord. The words, "dost thou not care?" are a subtle reproof of Jesus' inattention. She felt He showed no sympathy for her and that He was actually the cause of Mary's lax behavior.

Jesus gently reminded her that the preparation of a meal was secondary to intimate communion and the hearing of His Word.

Warren Wiersbe - Few things are as damaging to the Christian life as trying to work for Christ without taking time to commune with Christ. Perhaps in all of our busyness, we have been ignoring the Lord. The key is to have the right priorities: Jesus Christ first, then others, then ourselves.

I have attended church services that mirror the reverential attitude of Mary, and others whose assemblages display the traits of Martha ... those which take place in sanctuaries dedicated for worship and others in buildings suited for the clamor of self-indulgent religious activity.

Though one often fed my belly, the other fed my soul.
