THE BIBLE DOESN'T SAY THAT

'God helps those who help themselves' is an oft-used quote that many believe is from the pages of Scripture. It is actually in direct opposition to what the Word of God teaches and results in a spurious faith that is ego-driven by nature.

Any measure of self-reliance takes us down a dead-end street. Sanctification's ultimate goal is to rid us of this soul-damaging concept. Relying on human effort to any degree is an affront to the finished work of Jesus Christ. We have absolutely nothing to offer outside of our faith in His redemptive act.

If you read the Gospels, you will find that Jesus did not refuse to help the helpless. He did not withhold forgiveness and compassion from those who confessed their need for a Savior. He did not turn away from those who acknowledged that they had no power to change.

Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

When a Christian is tempted to trust in his own ability to deal with life's problems, his weakness will be revealed. If he takes pride in his successes, the Lord will allow him to fail. Learning total reliance on God in every situation results in His mercy and grace coming to the fore. That is what honors Him.

'God helps those who help themselves' is bad theology. Christianity is not something you offhandedly add to an egocentric life ... its sole purpose is to crucify that life and bring salvation to your soul.
