In order to have a true understanding of Scripture, it must be interpreted properly.
The process is called 'hermeneutics', a branch of theology that deals with the principles of exegesis. God scatters revelation on any given subject throughout the Bible. Our job is to put it all together so that we might discern divine truth.
Though you may study trusted commentaries and diligently compare other religious writings to the Bible, it is best to allow Scripture to interpret itself. Practicing good hermeneutics is extremely important because false teaching and heresy stem from the misguided application of God's Word.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Instead of reaching for truth through ill-conceived attempts to 'read between the lines', a literal interpretation of the Bible will establish a firm foundation upon which to build correct understanding.
Here are four steps that can help in your study of Scripture ...
1) Know the definition of words used by the writers. The original Greek or Hebrew meaning can help explain intent and application.
2) Context is important. For instance, observing how the Lord's words might have impacted His audience gives us deeper insight into their purpose.
3) Every Bible story, poem, and verse should be read with an understanding that the person of Jesus Christ is at the core of its intended impact.
4) Start with prayer, end with prayer, and allow prayer to touch every thought during your interpretation of Scripture. How does each day's study apply to your personal walk of faith?
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
The Word of God will interpret itself through the application of hermeneutics ... (the Bible will also expose who we are as believers when we dive headlong into its depths).
