My father-in-law passed away not long ago. He loved the Lord and knew that the kingdom of heaven awaited him. His last days were fraught with unrelenting physical pain but his quick-witted sense of humor and concern for others never waned.
Though we miss him dearly, there is comfort in knowing that his suffering is over and we'll see him again one day.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:4
There is a song that comes to mind when I think of him. It is 'Amazing Grace' interlaced with 'My Chains are Gone', originally performed by Chris Tomlin. Though the lyrics speak volumes concerning redemption, it carries a secondary meaning to me now. That which bound my wife's father to his painful condition has mercifully and irrevocably been cast asunder.
He is with his Savior now and it is as though I can hear him sing ...
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind, but now I see
I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy rains
