GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT

When a carnal believer is not content with his status in life, he may cloak his covetousness by using religion to accumulate material wealth (known as a 'name it, claim it' theology). Paul repudiates this ill-conceived, avaricious doctrine ...

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.  1 Timothy 6:6-8

Godliness is profitable for everything, both for life now and for the one to come. It represents our reverence for (and awe of) the Lord. Therein, lies the only source of true contentment. 

Spurgeon - God Himself is the power of godliness. The Holy Spirit is the life and force of it.  Many who have the 'form of godliness' are strangers to this power, and so are in religion worldly, in prayer mechanical, in public one thing, and in private another. 

Contentment separates you from the circumstances of life ... (both favorable and unfavorable).

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Philippians 4:12

For Christians, contentment is the acceptance of things as they are ... a belief that our wise and loving God understands what is best for us and always seeks our good.

Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is my portion, lest I be full and deny Thee and say, “Who is the Lord?” Proverbs 30:8-9

The soul that has surrendered his will to God is not concerned with things that can perish. His eyes are fixed on eternity ... and he trusts in Jehovah Jireh.
