If you truly desire to be a child in whom the Father has delight, take the following passage to heart. Allow sanctification to do its work, that you might possess the nature of God's only begotten Son.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:5-8
To have the mind of Christ is contrary to all that we know as a fallen race; it is to be utterly selfless ... a servant.
D C Egner - A former missionary told the story of two rugged, powerful mountain goats who met on a narrow pathway joining two ridges. On one side was a chasm 1,000 feet deep; on the other, a steep cliff rising straight up. So narrow was the trail that there was no room to turn around, and the goats could not back up without falling. What would they do? Finally, instead of fighting for the right to pass, one of the goats knelt down and made himself as flat as possible. The other goat then walked over him, and they both proceeded safely.
In a sense, this is what Jesus Christ did for us when He left heaven's glory and came to this earth to die for our sins. He saw us trapped between our sin and God's righteousness with no way to help ourselves. He humbled Himself by giving up His right to use His divine power. He came in the likeness of men and took the form of a servant. Then, by dying for sinful mankind, He let us "walk over Him" so that we could experience forgiveness and receive eternal life.
Christianity is not an offhanded "sign on the dotted line and then live any way you want until God takes you to heaven" agreement. It is instead a life under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, recognizable by a changed heart concerning the wellbeing of others.
... Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 1 Peter 5:5
Where are you spiritually positioned; do you look down on this world from some impersonal 'I've got mine' perch?
That is not the mind of Christ.
