Sin first entered the world in the Garden of Eden. The Lord had provided everything mankind needed for life and happiness. But Adam disobeyed God and from then on, iniquity has plagued the human race.
As Easter approaches, we read of another 'garden' ... one where obedience would again be put to the test.
They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed." Mark 14:32
The name means 'olive press'. It speaks to the crushing realization of His impending death. As overwhelming dread filled His mind, Jesus prayed ...
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Luke 22: 42-44
Hendriksen - Though it will never be possible for our minds to penetrate into the mystery of the horror Jesus experienced in Gethsemane, we cannot be far amiss if we state that it probably included at least this, that he was given a preview of the agonies of the fast approaching crucifixion. He had a foretaste of what it meant to be "forsaken" by his heavenly Father.
Jesus Christ passed the test of obedience that night and the gift of salvation is available to all who put their trust in Him.
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:8
In the second, our Savior took a stand.
