There are five times in Paul's writings when he uses the phrase 'This is a faithful saying'. Emphasizing that each accompanying statement is trustworthy, these verses represent brief summaries of key doctrines.
The first one lays down the foundation for salvation; the very mission of our Redeemer ... This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15) Even those who understand that Christ came to 'save' can find it difficult to believe that this salvation only belongs to 'sinners'. People tend to dwell on self-worth so when their utter 'unworthiness' is exposed by the Gospel message, they stumble at the foot of the cross. At that point, a decision is made to either cast oneself upon the grace of God or reject the Lord altogether.
The second instance introduces us to the subject of spiritual leaders ... This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. (1 Timothy 3:1) A man (not a woman) who is truly called to the ministry is marked by both an inward, consuming passion and a disciplined outward pursuit. For him the ministry is not the best option ... it is the 'only' option. There is nothing else he could do with his life that would bring fulfillment.
The third is in reference to 'godliness' ... For bodily exercise profits little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. (1 Timothy 4:8-9) People exercise to stay physically fit because they see the resulting benefits ... feeling better, living longer, looking good, etc. But ... the Bible says this discipline profits little; that our greater responsibility is to exercise and grow spiritually. Unless we progress in our relationship with the Lord, broken fellowship and a lack of spiritual effectiveness result.
The fourth statement ... This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. (2 Timothy 2:11) This condition is already fulfilled in every true believer. Identification with Christ in His death takes place at conversion, for in the 'new birth' we pass from death into life; we are crucified with Him and become eternally identified with Him in His life.
The last reference ... This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. (Titus 3:8) This sets forth the Lord's standard for life ... those who have accepted the gift of salvation should behave accordingly, profiting themselves and others.
Treasure up these 'faithful sayings', pilgrim. Let them be your guide, your comfort, and your instruction.
