GUARDIAN ANGELS

They are our unseen attendants. Their loyalty to their Lord leads them to take a deep interest in those He loves. Angels obediently accompany, defend, and preserve God's children ...

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.  Psalm 91:11-12

Spurgeon - 'For he shall give his angels charge over thee'. Not one guardian angel, as some fondly dream, but all the angels are here alluded to. They have received a commission from their Lord to watch carefully over all the interests of the faithful. The angels are bidden by God Himself to see to it that His elect are secured.

How angels 'keep us' we cannot tell. Whether they repel demons, counteract spiritual plots, or ward off the more subtle physical forces of disease, we do not know.

If our eyes were opened to the spiritual realm, we would see an innumerable company of angels ... all of whom are watchers and protectors of those who are in Christ. We may one day stand amazed at the multiplied services which these unseen bands have rendered.

Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation? - Hebrews 1:1-14

But even though they serve us on behalf of God, our ultimate well-being is not in their hands.

Spurgeon - They are servants of God and our willing guardians, but they are not to be worshiped. Jesus is Lord of all, and we are bound to adore Him, and Him only.

Angels are powerful examples to us of the obedience and worship God deserves. But they remain, for the most part, a 'mystery' ... rightly assigned to live in the background; that they might not draw attention away from our Redeemer.
