Let us observe for a moment the phrase 'But Now' in Scripture, It is used as a conjunction, introducing something that is in sharp contrast to the preceding statement.
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. Ephesians 5:6-8
God demands that we make a clean break from the ungodly lifestyle of our unregenerate past. That transformation is the evidence that we not only 'profess' Christianity, but also 'possess' Christ.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:9-10
Christians are often tempted to sneak back into the 'darkness' in order to satisfy the lust of the flesh. But that former life is in direct opposition to our new nature and can only bring heartache. By faith, we are to walk as 'children of light' so that a lost and dying world can witness the hope that dwells within ...
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you. 1 Peter 3:15
Salvation is a one-time event that changes our lives forever; sanctification is the process that continues until we reach our destination. Allowing God to do His work in us is what abiding faith is all about.
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation. Colossians 1:21-22
If you live on the 'but now' side of redemption, the ongoing challenge is whether Jesus has Lordship over every aspect of your life. Is His sovereignty evident in each thought, word, and deed? It is important to remember what you once were 'by nature' ... so as not to forget what you now are 'in Christ'.
