It helps focus your attention on the immediacy of each decision you make and each action you take. The continual distractions of this life can cause your eyes to wander, making it difficult to recognize where to place your next step. 

The cares of the world, the delight in riches, and the desire for other things enter in and choke the Word, and it proves unfruitful. Mark 4:19

Immersing yourself in the Word of God keeps you from stumbling off course. Neglecting it causes your 'moral compass' to weaken ... relegating the Lord's directives to vague suggestions. Obedience becomes an error-filled attempt to live the Christian life.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

The impact of today's moral relativism and situational ethics makes staying on the right path challenging. The modern mindset says, 'There are many paths to God' ... 'There’s no such thing as absolute truth' ... and 'Just do what feels right to you'. If you heed these voices rather than rely on the truth of Scripture, you'll undoubtedly encounter grief and ruin.

We have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 2 Peter 1:19
