Man naturally longs for that which will relieve the emptiness he feels inside. If in life he only drinks from this world's broken cisterns, his thirst goes unsated.
It is the Lord who provides ...
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life ... Psalm 36:7-9
1. As the God of creation, He is the fountain of 'physical' life on earth. In Him, we live, and move, and have our being. (Acts 17:28)
2. As the God of grace, He is the fountain of 'spiritual' life: our faith, our strength, our comfort, and our sanctification flow from Him. Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17).
3. As the God of glory, He is the fountain of 'eternal' life: our 'hope' that heaven awaits us comes from Him. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast ... (Hebrews 6:19)
The Lord spoke to the woman at the well concerning this 'fountain of life' ...
Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:10-14
Christ's finished work on Calvary's cross made a 'way' where there was 'no way'. He invites you to partake of this life-giving water. Receive the gift of salvation by faith in His redemptive act.
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35
This, and only this, can satisfy the longing of your heart ... drink it in.
