ACCUSING GOD

The Jews of Malachi’s day accused God of being unjust ...

You have wearied the Lord with your words. “How have we wearied Him?” you ask. By saying, “All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and He is pleased with them” or “Where is the God of justice?” Malachi 2:17

The Lord is angered when people accuse Him of wrongdoing. The phrase that speaks to His being 'weary' should not be construed as growing tired in a physical sense. As we attempt to comprehend the intended meaning of Scripture, we must not apply our frail human traits to the God of the universe ...

The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary. Isaiah 40:28

God was instead communicating His displeasure with Israel’s complaints. 'Where is the God of justice?' was a cynical and derisive statement of unbelief. The Lord is weary of such allegations.

They continued ...

It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? Certainly, evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it. Malachi 3:14-15

These same insolent accusations are leveled at God today. Unbelievers defiantly challenge the followers of Christ to answer their questions ... 'If God is good, why doesn’t He end suffering? Why does He allow evil? Why doesn’t God stop war, cure cancer, and end poverty?'

The truth is that we live in a sin-laden world brought on by Adam's fall. The suffering that mankind experiences in this life is used by God to bring the 'humble in heart' to Himself. The Lord will ultimately save believers from the curse and justice shall prevail. In the meantime, both 'good' and 'evil' men receive from God's hand ...

He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Matthew 5:45

Looking only for earthly gain in this life is vain and shortsighted. Rather than acknowledge God’s ultimate justice and eternal rewards, today's 'religious' sycophants want earthly recompense for their worship. This attitude is seen in those who follow the false 'prosperity gospel'.

Know that God is not bothered by sincere questions from those who seek Him, but He is 'wearied' when men petulantly accuse Him of injustice ... or when they claim that there is no benefit to worshiping the Lord.

We are to live by faith, and a lack thereof is wearisome to our God ... Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him. Hebrews 10:38
