We understand that food is vital for life. If you don't take in that which nourishes the body, it becomes weak and loses the ability to function properly.
Similarly, spiritual food is vital for your Christian pilgrimage. If you don't receive regular nourishment for your soul it weakens and becomes vulnerable to worldly influence, false religious doctrine, sin's temptation, a troubled mindset, and flagging faith.
The Word of God is spiritual 'food'. When Jesus was being tempted in the wilderness He said ... Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4).
We find that His Word is important for new believers. ... as newborn babes desire the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby. (1 Peter 2:2)
It is to be more valued than any bodily nourishment ... I have not departed from the commands of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily bread. (Job 23:12)
The Word of God wonderfully satisfies our soul's palate ... How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (Psalm 119:103)
The Bible’s use of food metaphors demonstrates the importance of ingesting divine truths, making them part and parcel of your very being. Scripture is not merely something to read but it is to be devoured by God’s people. We must consume it and then pause to 'chew on it' for a while ... meditating and reflecting on the meaning and application of what we’ve read.
Christ also spoke of another type of spiritual 'food'. The disciples brought provisions from town but Jesus chose not to partake, saying, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about”. (John 4:32)
This confused them for their minds were fixed on the physical meal. The Lord explained: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to accomplish His work” (John 4:34).
Then later, after feeding the 5,000, Christ referred to faith, salvation, and His sacrifice ... using a food metaphor: Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. (John 6:54-55)
So ... In order to live victoriously in this life as a follower of Christ, we must feast on all that God has provided for His children; i.e. His inerrant Word, His work to accomplish, and His Son's indwelling Spirit.
