RELIGION OR RELATIONSHIP

Two things help us understand and identify what world religions believe ...

Rules ...
Some focus entirely on man's 'acceptance of' and 'adherence to', an established list of do’s and don’t’s. For example ... Islam has its 'five pillars of faith' to live by, and Judaism has innumerable 'codes of conduct' to be observed. Both claim that by obeying the rules of their religion, a person will be considered right with God.

Rituals ...
Others concentrate more on observing 'rites of passage' specific to their beliefs (i.e. offering a certain sacrifice, performing a certain task, consuming a certain meal,  participating in a symbolic ceremony, etc.). The Roman Catholic church, Buddhism, and Hinduism are examples of 'ritual-based' religions that incorporate manmade sacraments.

God is offended by all of it ... In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. Mark 7:7

True faith is neither 'rules-based' nor 'ritual-based' ... but a relationship with God. Most religions hold that mankind is separated from the Creator and needs to be reconciled to Him. 'Religion' seeks to solve the problem by observing rules and rituals. 'Faith' believes that the gulf can only be bridged by God Himself ... and that He did so through His Son.

For by grace, you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

It's not that there are no 'rules' (do not murder, do not commit adultery, etc) and/or 'rituals' (water baptism, communion) associated with Biblical Christianity ... but they are not to gain favor with God or somehow 'earn' salvation. They are done out of love for the Savior, a desire to grow closer to Him, and gratitude for the gift already received.
