The word 'testimony' is most often used when a person is brought into a courtroom, placed under oath, and asked to share his personal knowledge or experience regarding the case.
When we add the word 'Christian', the subject is narrowed to the life-changing work of God. Only those who have received the forgiveness of sin can truly deliver this particular testimony.
It is important to follow Paul's example. He did not call attention to himself ... I did not come with superior eloquence or wisdom as I proclaimed the testimony of God. For I decided to be concerned about nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:1-2
If God opens the door to an evangelistic opportunity, a personal account of the Lord's grace can have a powerful impact. But as you offer that testimony, it is important to keep the focus on Jesus Christ; i.e. His death, burial, and resurrection. Explain the condition of your life before conversion, the circumstances that led you to the foot of the cross, and the transformative power of the Gospel.
It is vital to use the Word of God during the conversation. It carries the power to convict an unsaved soul and bring a man to repentance. Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16) I have listed several helpful verses in a previous post. See January 17, 2024.
You should also be able to describe the continuing process by which the Spirit comforts, guides, and protects those who put their faith in Christ.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:2
Your changed life is to be further evidence. Not only do we testify with our words ... but with our actions. In order that we might be a 'living' testimony of Jesus Christ, we are being changed into His likeness through sanctification.
Some believe that Christians ought not to verbalize their faith but simply live it out before men. It is not an 'either/or' proposition. Living the gospel message is important, but so is your verbal testimony ...
So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17
If you've experienced Christ's forgiveness and transforming power, you have a story to tell. People can argue against the existence of God but they cannot effectively argue against your personal testimony ... 'This one thing I know: I was blind and now I see'. John 9:25
