God spoke to mankind through many prophets in the Old Testament; they all knew that they were only messengers. The words were not their own.
Jesus, however, revealed that He was more than that. He was God incarnate, the Second Person of the Godhead. Ten times in the Book of Matthew, He corrected misunderstandings of the law or overruled Jewish custom by exercising His own authority, saying ...
“You have heard that it was said . . . But I tell you” (Matthew 5:22, 27-28, 31-32)
Jesus didn’t just 'claim' to be God; He backed it up with evidence ... wonderful works of healing, amazing displays of power over nature, divine insight into people's lives, and ultimately ... His resurrection from the dead.
Today, many skeptics regard Jesus as just a good moral man or a prophet who said a lot of profound things. They wilfully dismiss His Lordship, never seeing the fallacy of such reasoning.
C. S. Lewis - A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. Let us not come up with some patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher.
Jesus' claim of Deity is either true or false, there is no wiggle room. The question that He asked His disciples two thousand years ago is still fitting for you today ...
Who do 'you' say that I am? Matthew 16:15
May your answer be the same as Peter's ...
You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matthew 16:16
Once you've come to that conclusion, the door opens to receive Him as your personal Savior. Confess your sinful state, acknowledge that you cannot save yourself, and surrender to His Lordship.
