ONE LINK AT A TIME

The chain that binds those who are slaves to sin was methodically created over time. It does not come into existence as a finished product, but subtly gains strength ... one link at a time. A 'seemingly' minor indiscretion can take root in one's life and grow into a soul-destroying addiction.

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. James 1:14

Sin gains strength through repetition until one's conscience is seared and the ability to discern right from wrong is compromised. 'Enslavement' to habitual sin begins with a carnal desire to satisfy one's flesh and then grows from there.

We must learn to avoid even the first link ...

1. Come to understand two basic truths: All sin enslaves, and bondage begins in the mind. When a wrong thought creeps into our consciousness, we can either expel it or entertain it. The indwelling Holy Spirit exposes the threat and empowers us to do the right thing.

2. A strong antidote to temptation is the long-term view of disobedience. We cannot maintain a healthy relationship with the Lord and at the same time indulge in sinful behavior. Ask yourself ... 'Is the pleasure of this act worth breaking fellowship with God and reaping the consequences?' The answer is invariably 'NO'.

3. The Bible helps us navigate this fallen world. When we align ourselves with the truths of Scripture, we can recognize temptation and excise it from our minds. Placing ourselves under the authority of God's Word strengthens our resolve and guides us in the way.

We are given this promise ...

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Romans 6:17-18

If you are trapped in sin ... deliverance comes through faith in Jesus Christ. He is not only there when you trust Him for salvation, but remains an ever-present source for abundant life. When you come to abide in His presence, every chain is broken.
