SHALOM

No single English word can adequately convey the richness of the Hebrew word 'shalom'. It represents much more than 'peace'. (the common translation in the Bible)

Shalom signifies an overall sense of well-being ... health, quietness of soul, preservation, prosperity, tranquility, security, and safety. The following verse takes on a deeper meaning when we read 'peace' in that light.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

For the Christian, it represents a restored relationship with the Father, made possible by His Son's atoning sacrifice ...

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1

'Shalom' is often used to describe the absence of hostility or strife but in over 2/3 of Biblical references, it indicates a fulfillment that comes when individuals live in God's presence ... feelings of satisfaction, well-being, and contentment.

Believers are to experience the 'shalom' that Jesus offers ... Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:27)

As you anxiously await Christ's return, be encouraged by the promises found in Scripture ... I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

'Shalom' is still used as a greeting in Israel to express well wishes.

So I say to you, pilgrim ... Shalom.
