Religion is being used to deceive those who would fall prey to erroneous interpretations of God's Word ... But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (Matthew 15:9)
From the very beginning of the church age, Satan has sought to destroy Christianity from within. Peter warned of false prophets who were distorting the messages contained in the epistles written by Paul ... There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. (2 Peter 3:16)
The term 'twist' means an intentional misinterpretation and misapplication of Scripture. It involves the purposeful manipulation of a Biblical text to serve a personal agenda, justify sinful behavior, or promote a bastard theology.
Paul admonished those who drifted away from the truth ... I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel - which is really no gospel at all. Evidently, some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the Gospel of Christ. (Galatians 1:6-7)
God gave you His Word as a light to guide your steps, an unfailing source of strength and truth. Study it prayerfully so that you are equipped with the discernment necessary to follow this command ... Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1)
Any 'twisting' of Scripture is a sinful act of rebellion.
