According to Scripture, the 'heart' warehouses one's moral traits ... A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. (Luke 6:45)
God judges accordingly ... He does not see as man sees, since man looks at the outward appearance. The Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7)
We read that David's lust for Bathsheba led to adultery and subsequently, the intentional death of her husband. When Nathan the prophet exposed the king's iniquity ... guilt, grief, and remorse flooded his soul.
David not only sought forgiveness for what he'd done, but desperately wanted God to perform a 'heart transplant' and instill an unflagging desire to obey Him ... Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10)
This prayer is as appropriate now as it was back then. Everyone who calls upon the Lord for salvation is given a new heart washed in the 'blood of the Lamb'. Then we are transformed by the Holy Spirit's ongoing sanctification.
Because of what took place on Calvary's cross, the throne of grace welcomes every wayward sinner ... If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
No matter how dirty, God can create in you a clean heart.
