THOSE WHO FALL AWAY

The following passage from God's Word seems to argue against the 'once saved, always saved' doctrine that born-again Christians hold dear ...

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. (Hebrews 6:4-6)

There are two distinct interpretations concerning the spiritual status of the people being addressed here, the latter of which agrees with the overall Gospel message:

True believers who commit apostasy and forever lose their salvation ... negating the precept that Christ saves 'to the uttermost' (1 Thessalonians 2:16)

Counterfeit believers who have a 'form' of godliness and eventually return to the 'mire' ... always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:7)

Adrian Rogers - These aren't saved people who've lost their salvation, but people who came up to the 'brink of salvation'. After they've known the truth and nibbled at it, with eyes wide open they say no to God, refuse Christ, trample beneath their feet His precious blood, and as it were, crucify Jesus again. In so doing, they commit a greater sin than those who nailed Jesus to the cross of Calvary.

The perseverance to not fall away isn't a 'condition for salvation'; but the 'evidence of it' ... For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence firm to the end. (Hebrews 3:14)

Eternity with the Lord begins the moment you receive Christ as Savior, not when you leave this world ... I give (present tense) them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. (John 10:28-29)

Once you've trusted Jesus ... He will never let you go.
