Even the most dedicated Christian can be physically, mentally, and spiritually drained at times. The trials of living in a world that is not our home, the constant battle against temptation, the stinging memories of our sinful past, and the stark loneliness we feel on our walk of faith ... these can rob us of the joy of our salvation.
This is why the Bible stresses the importance of encouragement.
It reminds those who are struggling to stand firm ... But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. (Hebrews 3:13)
It is to be an ongoing practice that helps strengthen the faith of others ... Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
The Word of God is where we find the strength to carry on ... For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (Romans 15:4)
Jesus told His followers about the troubles they would face ... Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.' (John 15:20)
But He did not leave them without an encouraging statement ... I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)
You do not necessarily need a constant flow of new spiritual insight to push you onward. Often, what's needed is to be reminded of what's already been established in your heart and mind ... the sufficiency of Christ in all things, your adoption into God's family through Him, and His soon appearing to take you home.
