It is spoken of in several ways:
1. As an attribute of God -
- He protects us from worldly influence ... But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. (2 Thessalonians 3:3)
- He limits Satan's power to corrupt ... God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
- He wipes the slate clean ... If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
2. As a characteristic of men who feared Him -
- Noah ... By faith he, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. (Hebrews 11:7)
- Job ... The Lord said to Satan, "There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” (Job 1:8)
- Moses ... Jesus was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. (Hebrews 3:2)
3. As something that many people lack -
- The self-righteous ... Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, but who can find a faithful man? (Proverbs 20:6)
- Those who waver ... But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)
- Today's religious reprobates ... Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons. (1 Timothy 4:1)
When you receive the gift of salvation, 'faithfulness' is imparted ... But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)
So ... 'faithfulness' is the ongoing evidence that you've placed your life under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit's work of sanctification causes it to grow into a 'reliable, steadfast, and unwavering' symbol of your devotion.
