Gatekeepers were guards stationed at the entrances of ancient cities. They would warn of an approaching enemy who sought to breach their defenses and plunder their resources.
John Bunyan, the English writer and preacher, likened humanity to a city with five gates. He called them the Ear-gate, Eye-gate, Mouth-gate, Nose-gate, and Feel-gate. In other words, our five senses are the entryways through which we interact with this lost and dying world.
Sadly, unbelievers inevitably fall prey to Satan's devastating encroachment.
But when temptation seeks to gain entrance into the life of a believer, the Holy Spirit acts as the Divine Gatekeeper of his soul. He warns of any threat to a Christian's spiritual wellbeing (and the consequences of yielding to its 'siren song') ... 'This is dangerous, don't open the gate'.
A promise ... God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
If you choose to ignore the Gatekeeper, you've put yourself in jeopardy. But if the promptings of the Spirit and the Word of God are heeded, peace and security are yours ...
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior. (2 Samuel 22:3)
The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. (Nahum 1:7)
But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. (2 Thessalonians 3:3)
He 'stands at the ready' ... and will steadfastly guard your walk of faith.
