A mirror often reveals more than physical appearance. We are often stirred by what we see there ... as if one's spiritual condition is laid bare.
Some willfully push any 'inner' reflection aside, choosing rather to take pride in the image. In their eyes, that visage represents a 'life well-lived'. Like actors on a stage, they desperately cling to an outward portrayal that hides the darkness within.
Jesus described them this way ... You outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. (Matthew 23:28)
Others avoid the mirror altogether. Their reflection reminds them of failure, regret, and pain. They trudge through life, secretly hiding the guilt and shame associated with sin. It is a daily struggle to present themselves as 'okay'.
Paul knew that anguish ... O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? (Romans 7:23,24)
These two factions have something in common: the need for a mirror that doesn't lie. The Holy Spirit exposes the only true valuation of who and what we are ... sin-laden people in need of a Savior.
Now the mirror in your bathroom simply reflects the temporary shell of a redeemed soul ... your true essence is hidden in Christ.
