THE TRYING OF YOUR FAITH

Some teach that if a Christian gives close attention to his walk with the Lord, he won't experience adversity. The Bible teaches otherwise. There are two inescapable things that are common to every believer ... frequent episodes of temptation and trial.

Alexander Maclaren - Temptation says, `Do this pleasant thing; do not be hindered by the fact that it is wrong.' Trial says, `Do this right and noble thing; do not be hindered by the fact that it is painful.' The one is a sweet, beguiling melody, breathing soft indulgence and relaxation over the soul; the other is a pealing 'trumpet call' to high achievement.

By resisting that which we know to be wrong and accepting every circumstance as an opportunity for growth, we cooperate with the Holy Spirit in His work of sanctification.

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4

It is in the season of trial that God’s purpose for us is realized ... it is then that the conditions for growth exist. When we successfully weather a test of our faith, we can more readily reflect Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world.

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 1 Peter 4:12-13

As you personally overcome adversity, God will use you to comfort others who are experiencing similar hardships ... whether it be sickness, financial loss, the death of a loved one, addiction, or some other difficulty common to man.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Lay hold of this truth, pilgrim ... that a loving Father allows (and sometimes sends) trials into our lives, not to impair us but to improve us. Not to destroy us but to develop us.
