Misdirected faith is at the core of mankind's spiritual impasse. Scripture reveals that there are only two options when it comes to 'trust'.
Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh, and whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. Jeremiah 17:5-6
But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8
If you put trust in the wisdom, power, and goodness of man (or self) ... there exists nothing of any value to sustain a life in Christ. You may appear to be a successful stalwart of the faith but inside you remain spiritually parched, forever struggling to bear fruit fit for the Kingdom. And when suffering comes, you have no source from which to draw nourishment and hope.
Spurgeon - Oh, the blessedness of confidence in God! You see it here set out in contrast with the misery of trusting in men. Drought comes even to this tree, and times of troublesome to the believer; but the drought does not affect the tree, for it has secret, underground sources from which it sucks up its life; it spreads out its roots by the river; and blessed is that man who has a secret life, a secret strength, a secret comfort which sustains him in the trying hour. The world cannot perceive it, but he drinks it in and lives upon it.
Do not be that Christian who declares that their faith is in God, but whose confidence is actually in man’s intellectual religious acumen. Place all of your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone.
You will flourish 'like a tree planted by the water'.
