It is the guiding principle of the Christian life.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1
First of all ... biblical faith is a firm conviction that God 'exists'. It is not a blind leap into darkness, but a trusting step into a well-lit room where things are made clear. The Lord has placed into the heart of man not only an innate awareness of 'right and wrong' (evidenced by guilt and shame), but the knowledge that there is an 'eternity' beyond this life. Faith in God makes sense out of chaos.
Secondly ... biblical faith is a steadfast belief that the Lord will accomplish all that He has promised. Circumstances may seem impossible and the consequences frightening, but Christians obey God's Word with the belief that He will do what is best.
Faith is not blind optimism or a manufactured 'hope-so' feeling. Neither is it an intellectual assent to church doctrine. It is real, not in the sense that it can be tested or proven in a laboratory but that it is something that God can detect and recognize. He approves when you have it ... and disapproves when you don't.
And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6
All men possess faith in something. It can range from a strong belief in a political agenda ... to the influential opinions of some celebrity ... to the numerous unsubstantiated scientific theories, or ... to one's own 'self-reliance'.
The unsaved world fails to realize that 'faith' is only as good as its object, and ours is in Jesus Christ. It is a response to His love, the Holy Spirit's overture, and the revealed truths in scripture. And ... faith is strengthened by the evidence of a 'changed life'.
