When used as a noun, 'leaven' is the substance that causes the fermentation and expansion of dough. As a verb, it means 'to permeate with an altering or transforming ingredient'.
Christ warned His followers about false doctrine and rightly described it as 'leaven' ... it swells, spreads, and changes that which was initially complete in itself.
Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. Matthew 16:6
Both commands (take heed and beware) were written in the present imperative; calling believers to continually be vigilant concerning 'religion' ... for that which comes from a false prophet can appear very 'spiritual'.
MacArthur - Jesus’ admonition provided a somber warning against the ever-present temptations of legalism, hypocrisy, rationalism, materialism, immorality, and worldliness.
1. At first it appears slight and unimportant.
2. It is introduced surreptitiously and difficult to detect.
3. It penetrates gradually seeking to bring all of your faculties under its control.
I am not just referring to the cultish manifestos of Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, or Seventh-Day Adventists. Understand that any wayward teaching in a mainstream denomination also corrupts. 'Leaven' can gradually undermine a church's 'once sound' belief system and lead to a 'heretical theism'.
In these last days, we must give special attention to Jesus' warning about 'leaven' ... For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24:24
Don't only cling to the divine promises found in God's Word ... the 'warnings' issued by the Lord are just as vital to your spiritual well-being. As you navigate this fallen world, understanding the enemy and his tactics is imperative
