The term 'backslide' means to lapse morally, to turn from one's faith in (and practice of) the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This spiritual waywardness results in a crippled form of Christianity ... the weight of which is hard to bear.
Your own wickedness will correct you, and your backslidings will reprove you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter for you to have forsaken the Lord your God. Jeremiah 2:19
A Christian who 'backslides' is miserable because he had experienced the joy of salvation and the fruit of the Spirit. But once he yielded to temptation, allowed it to become a sinful habit, and justified it in his heart and mind ... his walk of faith was crippled.
Dr Adrian Rogers - When the Bible uses the term 'backslider', it's not talking about the lost ... but the saved. You must know the Lord before you can backslide away from the Him. A backslider is a Christian out of fellowship with God.
Forgiveness and restoration come when you confess that you have willfully gone astray ...
Return and I will cure you of backsliding. Jeremiah 3:22
Remember that if you are truly a child of God, there is placed within you a spiritual 'unsettledness' ... a sense that you are a stranger in this fallen world. It is no longer your home and you can never again find contentment in the way you conducted yourself before you were saved. When you backslide, a desperate need to repent and be restored should grip your conscience.
