There is a time in God's providential order when He listens to sinners and responds to those who repent. However, there also comes an end to that opportunity, which is why Paul's exhortation was so passionate ...
We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:1-2
How tragic that some give reasoned assent to the Gospel, yet through unbelief and disobedience don't allow it to take root. A great many say, “I won’t accept Christ now. I will do it some other time.”
Clarence Macartney - The greatest subject which can engage the mind and attention of man is eternal life. Hence the Holy Spirit, when he invites men to come to Christ, never says “Tomorrow” but always “Today.” If you can find me one place in the Bible where the Holy Spirit says, “Believe in Christ tomorrow,” or “Repent and be saved tomorrow,” I will come down out of the pulpit and stay out of it - for I would have no Gospel to preach. But the Spirit always says, “Today,” never “Tomorrow.” “Now is the accepted time.” “Now is the day of salvation.” “Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” “While it is called Today.”
You have no promise of a 'tomorrow' ... you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. (James 4:14)
There is an urgency to the Message of the Cross that must not be ignored ... God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 4:7)
Spurgeon - I pray that you may feel something pressing you, something that makes you end your long delay, something that makes you feel, “I have no more time to waste; I cannot afford to loiter; I must be saved tonight; I must hear the distinct ticking of God’s great clock, that stands in the hall of grace, and always says, ‘Now; now; now; now; now;’ and never utters any other sound.” Oh, may the Lord make it to be so, by his own free grace!
Paul had a desperate tone in his delivery when he pleaded with those who had delayed their commitment to Christ ... We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)
A sinner may indeed be able to repent up until the day he dies, but he should not live presumptuously ... Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. (Proverbs 27:1)
