Religion is defined as a belief system that one follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe. Therefore, 'atheism' is a religion.
When God created man, He placed within him an awareness of an 'eternal force' outside of himself. Every human is given the knowledge that there is a 'Sovereign Being' in whom he can place his faith.
Regardless of his defiant comportment, the atheist can't help but 'worship' something. So he creates an idol ... 'self'. He forms a religion based on his supposed intellect, strength, and ability to be 'lord' over his life. He defiantly says, “No God for me!” but actually means “No God but me!” He chooses to hide his rebellion with the lie ... "There is no God".
Atheism is not a disbelief 'in', but the rejection 'of' God ...
because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. (Romans 1:19-21)
Under the light of 'reason', It is difficult for an atheist to defend their vain tenets ...
Former atheist Lee Strobel writes - Essentially, I realized that to stay an atheist, I would have to believe that nothing produces everything; non-life produces life; randomness produces fine-tuning; chaos produces information; unconsciousness produces consciousness; and non-reason produces reason. Those leaps of faith were simply too big for me to take, especially in light of the affirmative case for God’s existence … In other words, in my assessment, the Christian worldview accounted for the totality of the evidence much better than the atheistic worldview.
No doubt you know someone who is an atheist (or an agnostic). How do you talk to them about your faith?
1. Don’t get dragged onto their battlefield. When they judge God for what He did or didn’t do, when they speak of their trust in science (evolution), or when they attack religion in general ... remember that you cannot 'argue' someone into saving faith. Respect their intelligence and ask questions concerning their beliefs.
2. An atheist's view of morality depends on the situation, so there’s no reference point when it comes to breaking God’s law. Unless warranted, don't use 'sin' as the initial subject of your conversation. Introducing Jesus Christ should be the primary goal.
3. Be kind, be humble, but be unwavering. The Gospel message has power and the Holy Spirit will give you the words to speak. As you look into the eyes of that wayward soul, remember that the Lord loves him beyond measure.
Godspeed, pilgrim.
