To those who study the Bible, the command to 'wait on the Lord' might seem like a passive exercise ... but if we take a closer look, Scripture reveals that the very opposite is true. It is a test of one's endurance as we continue to work the works of God, even in the midst of untoward circumstances.
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. Psalm 27:14
Confidence in God as an 'ever-present help in times of need' is the central idea of this exhortation. When things appear dire and the clock is ticking, we are not to 'grasp at straws' by taking action in our own wisdom and strength. 'Waiting' demonstrates trust in Jehovah Shammah (translated ... 'The Lord Is There').
Regardless of what you are now going through or that which looms on the horizon, take comfort in knowing that God is already there. He is quietly arranging everything in exactly the right position, for exactly the right time. He is Jehovah Jireh (translated ... 'He Will Provide').
How then do we wait? When shaken by the troubles of this life, find rest for your soul by abiding in Him ...
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6) Dynamic trust dispels fear and despair.
'Waiting on the Lord' is the confident expectation of a positive result. Therein lies the 'hope' that is based on the Holy Spirit's imparted knowledge of who God is and what He can do.
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
By nature, those who do not know the Lord will not wait on Him; but neither will Christians who fail to trust Him completely. When you wait with patience and gladness of heart, it becomes a strong testimony to those who witness your faith, and as a result ... may submit to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
There are times when you might feel that the Lord does not see your situation and your prayers seem to go unanswered. During these moments of doubt and fear, remember that His ear is always open ... cast your concerns at His feet.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
The Lord is in complete control, pilgrim. You'll look back and see that His hand was perfectly placed on your life.
