Even though men appear to honor the concept of 'justice', their partiality and unfairness have corrupted it. Mankind's sinful nature causes today's society to deny and/or dismiss the Lord's perfect standard of morality.
God’s sovereign authority is built upon it. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face. (Psalm 89:14).
The further the world drifts from God, the rarer true justice is brought to bear. Everything is turned on its head now. Sin has been redefined as 'virtue' and righteousness is seen as 'intolerance'. Justice is twisted, the wicked go unpunished, and innocent people are victimized.
Justice is linked to a right relationship with God, and those who know God will act justly: Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it completely. (Proverbs 28:5)
The consequence of disobeying God's law was ultimately witnessed on Calvary's cross. He could not just ignore man's iniquity; it required a penalty. The sins of the world were borne by Jesus Christ and His death became the sacrifice that satisfied justice.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:16-17
The cross represents the intersection of 'justice' and 'mercy'; God’s justice was meted out in full (upon Christ), and God’s mercy was extended in full (to all who believe).
Those who defiantly live in rebellion against God and openly flaunt their sinful lifestyle may appear to us as having escaped judgment. For now, it is obvious that the world just winks at their sin. But know this ... the Lord has promised to return and set things right.
With righteousness He will judge the needy, with justice He will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth; with the breath of His lips, He will slay the wicked. Isaiah 11:4
You will pay a penalty for your sins when God's justice is meted out ... unless the righteousness of Christ is applied to your life.
