The Hebrew noun translated as recompense means, 'a reward or punishment based upon what someone deserves'.
Because of their sins, God allowed the children of Israel to be taken captive by the Babylonians. That evil empire destroyed Jerusalem and the temple, but once the Jews humbled themselves and repented ... the Lord set them free. He then came against Babylon, leaving her in ruins.
Jeremiah prophesied of that day ... For the Lord is the God of recompense, He will surely repay. Jeremiah 51:56
Isaiah delivered a similar message regarding the Assyrians after they mistreated and oppressed God’s people ... According to their deeds, He will repay as appropriate, wrath to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies; Isaiah 59:18
As believers, we trust that God will punish those who deserve punishment. The evil we see in today's world, the reprobate lives of those in politics, the narcissism of the rich and famous who thumb their nose at God, and every satanic force that comes against the body of Christ ... Recompense will be meted out upon it all.
But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God will repay each person according to what they have done. Romans 2:5-6
Good news, pilgrim ...
That which took place on the Calvary's cross is the most significant example of recompense in human history. In giving His untarnished life as compensation for the sins of the world, Jesus satisfied a debt He did not owe. The death of Christ appeased God's wrath and satisfied His holy, righteous demands against sin. It is by grace through faith that you can now receive redemption.
This should be 'our' recompense in return ... a surrendered life.
All to Him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow
