The Word of God tells of a brief encounter between Jesus and a Samaritan woman. He had come to the well, and by divine appointment, she arrived to draw water. Aware of her spiritual condition, Christ initiated a conversation that resulted in these profound words ...
Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. John 4:13-14
Initially, the woman thought Jesus was offering a new and better source of natural water. But He was speaking of a spring that can forever satisfy the intrinsic deep-seated longing found in every soul. It is the only 'water' that can quench man's thirst for the true meaning of life.
Inside every human heart exists that spiritual craving. The Lord created man that way so he would be compelled to seek the truth found in God alone. To those who hear the Gospel, Jesus Christ is revealed as the only One who can bring relief to a dry and thirsty soul.
If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. John 7:37–38
Those who reject Christ desperately try to fill that void with earthly things (or put it out of their mind through a sinful addiction).
Spurgeon - Thirst is an insatiable longing after that which is one of the most essential supports of life. There is no reasoning with it, no forgetting it, no despising it, no overcoming it by stoical indifference.
As long as you are alive in this world, the invitation stands ...
He who is thirsty, let him come. He who desires, let him take the water of life freely. Revelation 22:17
Through faith in Christ's atoning sacrifice ... you will experience fellowship with God and your soul’s craving is forever sated.
You'll never thirst again ...
