Self is the 'god' people worship now.
Pride is the anchor that holds mankind to its egocentric moorings. The 'god of self' is depended upon to satisfy one's need for guidance, encouragement, and validation. Men have replaced the sovereignty of God with a corrupt throne of clay.
Paul attacks this form of idolatry ... casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)
The 'god of self' has taken over the theology of many mainline churches. Sermons about self-esteem, self-love, and self-fulfillment rain down from pulpits. Though Scripture refers to God as a 'consuming fire', He is delegated to 'sidebar' status ... only referenced when He fits the narrative.
Worshipers of the 'god of self' want just enough 'Jesus' to feel better about themselves ... but not enough to 'take up their cross and follow Him'. (Luke 9:23).
When 'you' control all of your coming and going, you serve a false god ... even if you profess that Christ is Lord. These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (Matthew 15:8)
1. Who has the final authority over my decisions?
2. Am I more concerned about being a better version of myself or knowing God?
3. Do I make excuses for sin rather than resisting and repenting of it?
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20
