BLASPHEMY

According to Scripture, 'blasphemy' is the verbal or written defamation of God (His name, His character, His work, and/or His holiness). It is a deliberate casting of disgraceful aspersions upon the Lord of Glory and is listed among the things that corrupt a reprobate soul ...

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man. Mark 7:21-23

As followers of Christ, we are to make sure our behavior does not give the unbelieving world a reason to allege hypocrisy on our part. It fuels their fire, causing the lost to become even bolder in their blasphemy toward God. Paul scolded those who claimed to be Christians, yet still lived in sin ...

The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you. Romans 2:24

Jesus spoke of another type of blasphemy ... that which is against the Holy Spirit. During the Son of God's time on earth, religious leaders witnessed the miracles that demonstrated His Lordship, yet attributed them to a demon. Their portrayal of the Holy Spirit's power as 'demonic' was a willful rejection of Christ's anointing and proof of divinity.

Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin. He said this because they were saying, 'He has an unclean spirit'. Mark 3:28-30

But Scripture's most significant accusation of blasphemy came at the hands of the priests and Pharisees who condemned Jesus ...

Then the high priest said to him, “I demand in the name of the living God - tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

Jesus replied, “You have said it. And in the future, you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Blasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? What is your verdict?”

“Guilty!” they shouted. “He deserves to die!” Matthew 26:63-66

If Jesus were just a man claiming to be God, He would have indeed been a blasphemer ... but by faith, Christians know the truth. He is both Lord and Redeemer.

The accusations against Him needed to stand and 'injustice' had to fall upon the sinless Lamb of God. Christ's willingness to suffer and die on Calvary's cross made a way where there was no way ... and victory is ours for the claiming.
