Some fall away from the Biblical truths they once espoused (only to embrace heretical false teachings). Others abandon the Lord altogether and renunciate their Christian faith.
The Word of God has much to say about 'spiritual defectors' ... It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command passed on to them. (2 Peter 2:21)
Like many religious people, they had 'intellectual knowledge' but not the 'heart-felt, experiential knowledge' that causes a man to fully surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
They were 'professors of', but never 'possessors of' ... salvation. In due time they can't help but go back to the lifestyle that reflects the unredeemed nature ... Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.” (2 Peter 2:20-22)
The Bible refers to true followers of Christ as 'sheep'. Make sure you are not just a 'sow' in sheep's clothing ...
Test and evaluate yourselves to see whether you are in the faith and living your lives as [committed] believers. Or do you not recognize this about yourselves [by an ongoing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you - unless indeed you fail the test and are rejected as counterfeit? 2 Corinthians 13:5 Amp
