THE TOWER OF BABEL

From the beginning, man has wanted to be in control of his own destiny (apart from God). It started with the fall of Adam and continues to this day.

There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one. Romans 3:10-12

That rebellious spirit became an intractable mindset before the flood. Man chose to ignore Noah's warning of impending judgment and everyone outside of the ark was destroyed.

Then a divinely ordered 'reset' was to take place ... God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth." (Genesis 9:1).

God’s command was for them to spread throughout the entire world, but man chose to do the exact opposite ... And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:4)

The construction of the 'Tower of Babel' and the Lord's reaction to it became a defining moment in human history ... And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they have started to do, and now nothing which they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” (Genesis 11:6-7)

So God Himself enforced His original command ... that humanity should spread throughout the world.

So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city. Therefore it was named Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. Genesis 11:8-9

Three things in the heart of man led to God's decisive action ...

1. Their insolent defiance ... Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)

2. Their lust of the flesh ... But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. (James 1:14)

3. Their need to be lauded ... for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. (John 12:43)

And mankind still has that sinful Adamic nature.

The good news is ...
In the same way that God stepped in and disrupted Satan's plan for the city of Babel ... He stepped in and disrupted Satan's plan for man's lost condition.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Don't erect a 'tower' of self-sufficiency in your life. It can never satisfy the longing of your heart. Surrender everything to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and be blessed.
