A CALL TO ADVOCACY

Within the body of believers, there were three groups about whom the apostle had concerns. Paul listed their specific behaviors or attitudes, and instructions on how to come to their aid ...

We urge you, brothers and sisters, to admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with everyone. 1 Thessalonians 5:14

In each case, the actions to be taken are expressed in the 'present imperative' tense. They were to be carried out as a perpetual duty (with the Spirit's guidance, always showing grace).

1. 'admonish the unruly' ...

Those who are wilfully defiant and 'out of line' are to be reproved. If anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. (James 5:19-20)

2. 'encourage the fainthearted' ...

Those who feel that they are not up to the task at hand are to be reassured. Remind them that ...  those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

3. 'help the weak' ...

Those who are powerless to produce spiritual fruit for lack of understanding, stability, or purpose are to be supported. Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength, and not just please ourselves. Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification. (Romans 15:1-2)

We are called to look out for fellow Christians who might be struggling (and seek help when we ourselves have need) ... members of one body that come alongside one another for encouragement, instruction, comfort, and support on our walk of faith.
