LOVE DOES NOT DISHONOR OTHERS

The sixth in our series on Biblical love ...

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Love is not 'ill-mannered'.

Lenski - When pride puffs up the heart, unseemly conduct naturally follows. Tactlessness fails to accord to others their proper dues of respect, honor, or consideration. Love is forgetful of self and thoughtful toward others.

Overbearing and rude men attempt to elevate themselves at the expense of others (sometimes subtly - most times, not). Regardless, they care nothing for the feelings or sensitivities of the ones they disparage. We even see it in those who appear religious ... but are void of godly love.

As a Christian, you are to ... be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15

A discourteous person has an 'all about me' mindset. By contrast, Biblical love is 'others focused'. Born-again believers are transformed into the likeness of Christ so that His divine love shines forth ... But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, that is, Christ. (Ephesians 4:15)

If you were raised in a rude and hostile environment, it might feel natural to behave boorishly. But when the truth of your sinfulness is revealed and you surrender your lives to Christ something wonderful takes place ... the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (Romans 5:5)

True Christian love is never ugly, indecent, unseemly, or unbecoming. It does not dishonor others.
