LOVE IS NOT SELF-SEEKING

The seventh in our series on Biblical love ...

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Godly love does not make demands and trample on the rights of others to advance a personal agenda. The 'self-seeking' man is contentious ...

Vance Havner - In fact, he's so bent on getting his way that he'll twist the facts; look for loopholes; put words in other people's mouths; try to hold others accountable for promises they never made; leap on administrative mistakes as opportunities to twist someone's arm; or seek various other methods to turn situations to his benefit. This is manipulation.

He is insatiable in his hunger to get what he believes is rightfully his ... 'scheming' his way to that end with no regard for the devastation left in his wake.

We are to leave that 'me first' ideology behind ... Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4)

The one who loves is willing to forgo recognition and lay down his rights for the sake of the recipient. Jesus demonstrated it in a profound way ... For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)

True Christian love sets aside selfish desires to serve the needs of others.
