SOLITUDE

It is an oft-neglected spiritual discipline. Times of 'solitude' are an important part of one's walk of faith. Distancing ourselves from the world (and its distractions) helps us to refocus our attention, realign our priorities, and reaffirm our position in Christ.

Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

In that quiet place, we can lay our burdens down ... an intimacy with God that refreshes the soul.

Scripture reveals that solitude was a consistent practice in the life of Christ ... But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. (Luke 5:16)

He sought alone time with His Father ... Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. (Mark 1:35)

After hearing of John the Baptist's death, He mourned (apart from the crowd) ... When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. (Matthew 14:12-13)

Christ's example sets a pattern for our spiritual journey. There should be frequent 'rest stops' along the way. Those private places are where we can meditate on God's Word (and the precious promises therein). Periods of solitude also encourage a more open and honest prayer life.

Pause at His side, pilgrim. Your Lord is anxious to spend time with you.
