True believers seem to have a 'serious countenance' about them as they navigate this lost and dying world.
Some religious groups would shame them into thinking something is wrong in their relationship with God. They believe Christians should have a gleeful, happy, 'head in the clouds' nature.
In reality, that approach is a vain attempt to avoid change ... Sorrow is better than laughter because sober reflection is good for the heart. (Ecclesiastes 7:3)
Followers of Christ are 'in process'. Our old nature is being disarmed through the Holy Spirit's lifelong work of sanctification. Temptation is a constant threat ... so 'soberness' keeps us wary of Satan's devices.
Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8
Though painful at times, spiritual 'sobriety' leads to reflective thinking, wisdom, and altered behavior ... thus steadying your walk of faith. You focus on the sufficiency of Christ in all things.
Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 1 Peter 1:13
Your sensitive conscience is a gift, therefore serious reflection should not be thought of as an unhealthy frame of mind that must be silenced. According to the Word of God, you are to 'work out your salvation with fear and trembling' (Philippians 2:12)
The Lord has given us a precious promise ... Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
For now ... be sober-minded.
