When shame and regret weigh heavy on the soul ... that acute sense of guilt is what the Lord uses to bring us to Himself.
Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation. 2 Corinthians 7:10
1. Your sensitive conscience is a gift ...
Feelings of remorse should not be thought of as an unhealthy frame of mind that you need to silence. They are symptoms of your spiritually impaired condition. Confess that you are 'sin-sick' and in need of God's intervention.
2. True repentance brings relief ...
Godly sorrow places you at the foot of the cross where Christ bore your shame. When by faith you allow His blood to cleanse you, sin's burden is lifted and 'newness of life' is imparted.
3. Assurance of salvation can be yours ...
If you depend on human effort to release you from a guilty conscience, you've failed to grasp the message of the Cross. When the righteousness of God's Son is applied to your account ... rest for your soul is the blessed result.
James referenced the deep sorrow necessary for regeneration to take hold in your life ... Come close to God and He will come close to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into gloom. (James 4:8-9)
It is in that broken state, that the sufficiency of Jesus Christ's atoning sacrifice becomes the only truth that matters. Then, as you surrender your life to Him ... His love, mercy, and grace wash over you.
