Jesus warned His disciples concerning those who display outward piety but lack true devotion to God ... Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch. (Matthew 15:14)
That which Jesus condemned in His day is no different from the legalism that mainline denominations, religious cults, and individual 'torchbearers' attempt to enforce now. Preachers are consistently elevating a humanistic interpretation of Scripture and the traditions of men above God's Holy Word.
We are exhorted ... not to believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God. (1 John. 4:l)
Does the teacher point people to Jesus and not to himself?
Does he proclaim salvation by grace through faith and not by works?
Does he 'rightly divide the Word of Truth'?
Does his life reflect that of Christ?
When spiritual leaders vomit out 'self-congratulatory' sermons from a bully pulpit, they guide untold numbers into the 'proverbial ditch'. According to the Bible, grave consequences await those who mislead the souls of men ...Not many should become teachers, for you know that we will be judged by a higher standard [because we have assumed greater accountability and more condemnation if we teach incorrectly]. (James 3:1)
And remember ...
When Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, or any other wayward belief system comes knocking at your door, don't give ear to their arguments for they openly reject the Gospel of Christ ... Avoid the profane idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called 'knowledge'. (1 Timothy 6:20)
Exposing yourself to their teaching will bring confusion to your walk of faith. When human rules and regulations take priority over God’s Word, you are progressively pulled away from 'the simplicity that is in Christ'. (2 Corinthians 11:3)
