The prophetic 'end of days' is upon us and an increasing number of Christians are being imprisoned, tortured, and killed ... all because they refuse to deny Jesus as Lord.
The 'martyr' chooses to accept his fate rather than 'disown' the Son of God. The love he has for the One who bore his sin debt moves him to freely offer his own life in return.
Jesus told of the 'cost' and the 'reward' of discipleship ... Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness's sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:10)
Christian martyrs are often models of divine grace. When Stephen was being stoned, he faced death with forgiveness on his lips ... He fell to his knees and cried out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them'. (Acts 7:60)
He was echoing the words Christ uttered from Calvary's cross ... 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do'. (Luke 23:34)
The apostles held to the truth of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection to the very end. News of their martyrdom at the hands of evil men was proof of their profound faith ... inspiring the early church. The Gospel was spread far and wide.
Spurgeon - Never did the church prosper and truly thrive as much as when she was baptized in the blood. The ship of the church never sails so gloriously along as when the bloody spray of her martyrs falls on her deck.
These stalwarts of the faith took Jesus' admonition to heart ... Everyone who shall confess me before men, he will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, he will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 10:32-33)
When you surrender your life to the Lord Jesus Christ, you'll become a target for those who hate Him. Resolve to take a stand ... regardless of the cost.
