OUR STANDARD

A 'holier-than-thou' attitude is the mindset of those who consider themselves to be morally superior to other Christians. It is rooted in a standard of judgment that Scripture warns against ...

Why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. (Romans 14:10)

When someone believes he is in good standing with a holy God because he doesn’t struggle with certain temptations that he sees in fellow believers, he is grading himself 'on a curve' ... a goodness quotient based on how he compares to them.

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. (Philippians 2:3)

We must not display a critical countenance that causes weaker Christians to see themselves through your flawed standard for righteousness ... rather than Jesus' atoning sacrifice.

For we dare not count or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. They who measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another are not wise. (2 Corinthians 10:12)

When you wear your personal convictions like some self-congratulatory 'crown' and criticize those who fall short, the Pharisaic hypocrisy that Jesus condemned is present in your life ...

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You tithe mint and dill and cumin but have neglected the weightier matters of the law: Justice and Mercy and Faith. These you ought to have done without leaving the others undone. (Matthew 23:23)

Don't judge your personal walk of faith against that of fellow believers and fall into that prideful 'holier-than-thou' attitude. Seek instead to be an encourager of the brethren ...

Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way. (Romans 14:13)

The Son of God's sinless life is 'The Standard' by which everyone will be judged.

Jesus is the only Way, the only Truth, and the only Life. Receiving Him as Savior cloaks you in His perfect righteousness. If you rely on your 'worthiness' track record, you'll be denied access to His Kingdom.
